Safe Routes to School Coordinator
Position Description:
Avenues in Motion, a community-based nonprofit organization serving northwest New Jersey, is hiring a full-time Safe Routes to School Coordinator to join our dynamic team. Avenues in Motion delivers programs that improve the mobility, the environment and overall quality of life in northwest New Jersey.
The successful candidate will be directly responsible for coordinating our Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. Supported by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the SRTS program is a statewide initiative that aims to partner with schools and communities to prioritize and implement opportunities for people to walk, bike, or travel by other wheeled devices. By focusing on improvements to support active travel by youth, the Coordinator works to create conditions that are safe, healthy, equitable, and appealing for all. Whether it is organizing special events such as Walk to School Days, presenting in-class bicycle and pedestrian safety programs or involving students in walkability studies, the SRTS Coordinator has a direct responsibility to handle relationships and shows a comfort level interacting with students of varying ages as well as various stakeholders, including school representatives, parents, law enforcement and other municipal members. This position requires organization and attention to detail in the outreach, planning, tracking, and reporting of all program activities. Additionally, this position will work closely with our Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator to assist in the advancement of livable and safe communities. This requires assistance at weekend bike safety and Learn to Ride events, demands attention to detail and an interest in pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The SRTS Coordinator will report directly to the Active Transportation Manager and will work in tandem with other staff members.
This is a hybrid remote position offering a flexible work schedule with full benefits including healthcare, vision, dental, retirement contributions and paid time off. This position requires facilitating in-person weekend classes and events when necessary.
Anticipated salary for this position is $42,000 – $47,000 and is based upon qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct informal education, both in-class and community-based bicycle and pedestrian safety programs for grades K-12. Avenues in Motion’s SRTS programs include Ready to Walk and Roll, Traffic Safety Town, Bike Driver’s Ed, Bike Rodeos, Walk to School Days, etc.
- Customize SRTS offerings for interested schools and municipalities. This includes organizing groups of stakeholders, conducting walkability and bikeability assessments, writing school travel plans, promoting student travel tallies, creating and conducting surveys, submitting program recognition materials and outreaching to communities about applicable state and federal funding when available.
- Gather information and report all Avenues in Motion’s SRTS activities both monthly and quarterly
- Provide assistance within the Bike Right program
- Work collaboratively with other staff to deliver effective programs and community engagement
Basic Qualifications:
- BS or BA degree in education, communications or related field
- Strong communications skills and attention to detail
- Understanding of transportation safety as it relates to active forms of transportation
- This is a hybrid remote work environment; however, ability to work weekends is a must
- Valid NJ Driver’s License and car available for travel
- Ability to ride a bike
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience in education, particularly in speaking in front of large groups of students
- Ability to be flexible to handle multiple priorities
- Program management and/or grant writing experience
- Analytical skills and the ability to provide insight and opportunities for improvement
- Passion for pedestrian and bike safety
