What is TDM?

Transportation Demand Management (TDM) refers to a set of strategies utilized to maximize commuters’ travel options. The goal of TDM is to promote transportation options that reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and are accessible to everyone.

One avenue to accomplish this goal is to collaborate with employers on their employees’ work commutes. Common employer TDM strategies include:

  • Offering commuter benefits (i.e. pre-tax transit, parking cash-out)
  • Supporting telework and hybrid schedules
  • Hosting commuter events and providing on-site amenities
  • Participating in recognition programs like AIM’s Workplaces in Motion (link to webpage) or Best Workplaces for Commuters
  • Providing alternative transportation infrastructure (i.e. EV charging, bike share, trip planning apps, etc.)

TDM strategies have many additional benefits to employers including improving employee retention and attracting talent, expanding your business’s candidate pool, reducing employer costs, enhancing employee safety, and improving sustainability.

Any workplace in our service area is eligible to participate in Workplaces in Motion, our regional certification program that celebrates employers who implement TDM strategies. The program runs on a 2-year cycle and has 4 levels of recognition (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum). Each level has a flexible list of actions you can choose from based on what matters most to you. AIM offers free services to help you accomplish your goals, including personalized support from a TDM expert. Let’s work together to improve your employees’ job satisfaction, retention, and commutes as your business becomes a TDM leader.
